The ideals of the Sikh faith advise the devotee to rise early in the morning and meditate on God. Meditation, known as naam jap or naam simran, is usually done while sitting comfortably, cross-legged, on the floor.Nitnem is a set of morning, evening, and bedtime prayers which are read or recited daily, while sitting or standing. Sikhs normally do not say prayers while kneeling as Christians or Catholics do. Some Sikhs occasionally use prayer beads, called a mala, to help with concentration.Extended prayer may take the form of Sejh, Sidharan or Akhand Paath, either intermittent or unbroken reading of the complete Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh scripture. A formal prayer of supplication, called Ardas, is offered while standing. Prayer and meditation focuses on praising God, and may take the form of singing as in kirtan. Sikhs believe prayer and meditation to be essential in attaining desirable qualities and overcoming ego. Sikh scripture counsels that each breath is an opportunity for prayer.

ok here we go.. A baptised Sikh is to wake up 3 hours before sunrise and read 5 prayers which have been written by the gurus These prayers are

  • Japji sahib (written by Guru Nanak Dev Ji)
  • Jaap Sahib (Written By Guru Gobind singh ji)
  • Tav Parsad Swaiye ( Written By Guru Gobind singh ji)
  • Chaupai Sahib(written by Guru Gobind Singh Ji)
  • Anand sahib written by Guru Amar Das Ji)

A batised Sikh is to wear the 5ks which are:

  • Uncut hair anywhere on the body
  • Iron bangle
  • Wooden comb
  • A Dagger
  • And the Shorts.

Each of these sybols have different roles such as

  • The uncut hair sybolises a holy image. By not cutting our hair it symbolises that we have sacrificed ourseles to gods will
  • The Iron Bangle reminds us of the never ending life cycle that we must break by reciting his name. also to sme Sikhs its symbolises that we have been handcuffed to god and he watches everything we do.
  • The wooden is a sign of cleanliness. also each dead hair that falls out of our head or body symbolises one bad deed being removed.
  • The dagger is a symbol or justice and reminds a Sikh that our duty is to protect anyone who is in daner or needs help.
  • the Undershorts are a symbol of chasity and reminds us not to fall in the trap of lust. which is one of the 5 vices that we must overcome.

Sikhism isn't really a religon but a way of life and our Guru, Granth sahib jee is he manual to how to live our life.

Why do Sikhisms go on pilgriamges?

Sikhs don't go to pilgrimage, Sikhism as a religion is oppose to pilgrimage. Though Sikhs do like to visit some particular places of their worship (Gurudwara) but that is because it holds historical and cultural significance. As for worship of God, anytime and anyplace is good for it.

Why do people respect Guru Nanak?

Sikhs DO NOT worship Guru Nanak. They worship the Divine Light of God that is in Guru Nanak. Guru Nanak is NOT a deity in the Sikh religion, he is a teacher. Sikhs still bow today to Guru Granth Sahib. That does not mean they worship it, it means they revere the Divine Knowledge that it contains.

Should Sikhs not have pictures or paintings depicting the Gurus?

Sikhism as a religion is oppose to idol worship, therefore Sikhs never make any idol or pictures of God. Also, Sikhs only worship God. As for Gurus, the depiction of Guru's pictures can only help one to relate one's thought to Guru's instruction but otherwise, there shouldn't be any reason for pictures of Gurus. But if any Sikh worship the picture of a Sikh Guru then that Sikh is not only performing idol worship but also worshiping the God in the form of a picture which Sikhism opposes as a religion as mentioned above.
