Sikhs treat the Guru Granth Sahib as a Guru because it has all of the Ten Gurus' readings and thoughts in it.

My answer : The word "guru" in Sanskrit has many meanings, one of which is "Word" or "shabad" in sikhism. That signifies that one must follow the word of advice from the guru, and not necessarily the guru as his personae.

It is also a way to be free of human beings who pretend to be holy and gurus or religious teachers. The last human Guru of the Sikhs gave Guruship or invested the role of Spiritual Guidance to Guru Granth Sahib, so we would not follow any human gurus. For instance, after the death of the eighth human Guru of the Sikhs, all these people pretended they were the ninth Guru. When the true ninth Guru was revealed, these guys ran away.

Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the final and eternal Guru of the Sikhs. The importance lies because of the fact that it contains all the teachings of Sikh Gurus and Sikh Bhagats (Devotees) and in 1708 A.D the tenth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh Ji decreed Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal and final Guru of Sikhs.

All Sikhs respect Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Nothing sits above the Guru Granth Sahib, the head should be covered, no .

Respect is the most important thing in our religion. We're known nothing without it. So we respect the Guru Granth Sahib. Its the holy scripture of Sikhism. The words describe the qualities of God and why one should meditate on God's name. Its just like how Christians go to church and listen to the priest or The Bible.

The Guru Granth Sahib is the book that the 10th Guru wrote and left for Sikhs instead of another Guru.

It is treated very specially because it is the last peice of the Gurus they have left and it is the answer to how they should live their lives.

The Granth Sahib is the 11th and final Guru. Within it, thousands of years of knowledge from the previous Gurus are kept. From the book, Sikhs can learn about their religion in a more in depth way.

Why do Sikh's believe their holy book is important?

Guru Granth Sahib Ji (the Sikhs holy book) contains the actual spoken words by the Sikh Gurus and thus those Words themselves are now the Guru of Sikhs. Furthermore, Sikhs consider Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the Living Embodiment of Guru for the same reason. Sikhs don't treat Guru Granth Sahib Ji as Holy Book but as a Living Guru. Also, the 10th Guru, Guru Gobing Singh Ji, announced himself that out final guru would be the Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Why do Sikhs show their holy book the same respect as they would show a human guru?

Sikhs believe that their holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib, is a living guru and the embodiment of divine wisdom. They show it the same respect as they would show a human guru out of reverence and devotion. It is considered a spiritual guide and source of truth, and Sikhs believe in its authority and teachings.

Why do people respect Guru Nanak?

Sikhs DO NOT worship Guru Nanak. They worship the Divine Light of God that is in Guru Nanak. Guru Nanak is NOT a deity in the Sikh religion, he is a teacher. Sikhs still bow today to Guru Granth Sahib. That does not mean they worship it, it means they revere the Divine Knowledge that it contains.

What is in the Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji?

This is a collection of hymns, and poems, written be devout Muslims and Hindus. This collection was first known Adi Granth, or "first book".It was declared that this collection should be the Guru for all time. The book is treated as one would treat a highly honored human Guru.It always has its own room, and when ever it is moved it is attended be five Sikhs, who represent the Tanj Pyares ("five beloved"), the five men who came forward to start the Khalsa. It is a holy book that is the guru for khalsa. The guru granth sahib has prayers and kirtan.---- Clarification: The Guru Granth is the final Guru, and it contains all the teachings of the Gurus.

Who was the last guru of Sikhs?

Clarification in bold. The line of human Gurus was ended by the departure of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji became the eleventh and eternal Guru of Sikhs. Therefore, Sikhism still has Guru and always will have one. The 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, announced that our final Guru would be the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, which contains all the teachings of the 10 Gurus. The Guru Granth Sahib Ji is our holy book, but we tend to not refer to as a book but a living Guru. We treat it as we would if we had a real life Guru in front of us.

Why do you put the Granth Sahib on a bed --- Why the Chanani or canopy?

Please always treat any Gurbani text with the utmost respect. Never place any Gurbani (in original Gurmukhi) text on the floor or ground. One should keep Gutkas covered in Rumallas. The Full version of Guru Granth Sahib must be treated as eternal Guru. This is to express our regards and our respect for the Holy Scripture, the True King. The king commanded the greatest power, hence also the maximum respect and honor, in the olden days. Guru Nanak said that the true kings are those who love God and help others to do that. They are the rulers of the hearts of the people. The political kings are temporary kings and their authority ends with their death. The Gurus are the true kings; they teach Truth and rule our hearts. The Guru Granth Sahib is the embodiment of the spirit of all the Sikh Gurus and many other holy men whose hymns are included in it. We respect them as the true kings. The king sat on a throne under a canopy. He used to have a fanlike structure to be waved over his head as a symbol of his royalty. The Guru Granth Sahib, being the true emperor, is provided all these regal paraphernalia in the Gurdwara. We install the scripture on a throne (called Manji Sahib) with pillows around for supporting it. A canopy (Chanani) is provided above the scripture in the same way as it was put over the head of a king while he attended his court. During the session (Diwan), a person, with Chaur in his hand, is always in attendance on the scripture installed respectfully in the hall. For maintaining due regards and respect, we carry this holy scripture to another room when the hall is to be cleaned or when the session is over for the day. Before we bring the Guru Granth Sahib in the hall, we set everything in the hall properly. This is the court of the Guru. You will understand the whole ceremony better if you bring into mind the scene of the courtroom where everything is set and made ready before a judge enters his court. The Guru Granth Sahib is the Emperor of Emperors, hence all these ceremonial decorations.
