Because the Human could find out what they are and ruin their lifes. Also it is not the humans they are afraid of. I think they're afraid of themselves, killing humans because they don't want to be monsters. They want to be good, and sometimes humans make it difficult, like having a papercut.
If vampires even exist, they wouldn't want people to fear them and out of that fear want to murder them.
