It isn't so much cartoon versus realistic, as it is children oriented versus adult oriented.
Adults watch adult oriented shows that may or may not be realistic. Traditionally Cartoons were a medium focused towards children. As the focus of cartoons changes the audience will change with it.

∙ 10y agoIn the US (and in most Western cultures) animated programs are seen as being primarily for children, because most of them ARE primarily developed to appeal to children: they have simple plots and broad humor.
This wasn't always the case, and even in works that are produced primarily for children the makers will sometimes slip in a "parental bonus": something that will sail right over the heads of the kids, but will amuse mom or dad. The "Rocky and Friends" show was famous for including puns of this type: one sequence featured the MacGuffin "the Ruby Yacht of Omar Khayyam" (which maybe not a lot of adults these days would get; Rubaiyat is a Persian word meaning a collection of poems, and probably the most famous one is that of Persian poet Omar Khayyam ... from FitzGerald's translation of which come phrases such as "The moving finger writes, and having writ, moves on", "A jug of wine, a loaf of bread, and thou", and "I often wonder what the vintners buy one-half so precious as the stuff they sell").
In Japan, while there are certainly cartoons made for children, it's also common for there to be works which can be appreciated by adults (and some which, due either to violence, sexuality, or complexity of subject matter, are very definitely not intended for children). This can present a problem in importing such works: adults aren't interested because experience has taught them "cartoons are for kids", and kids (especially somewhat older kids) might be interestedenough but their parents have a cow when they finally notice what the kids have been watching.

Why do adults expect teens to grow up and not watch cartoons?
Not all adults expect that. Many adults watch cartoons themselves. I think in general though, adults have a lot of responsibilities and they want teenagers to learn about responsibilities and learn to contribute to society before they become adults. Some of them might push too hard, but some teenagers don't take responsibility for pretty much anything either... so there is no way to say "this group is right and this group is wrong" in questions like this. I'm an adult, and I take responsibility for a lot of things... have a job, pay the rent, etc. But I also like cartoons. I don't necessarily think that one has anything to do with the other. It is just the perception that people are sitting around watching something silly and not learning to work hard... that sort of thing.

Probably because you can still grow up and yet watch cartoons. Many adults like cartoons and still behave like adults.

I'm not sure that statement is accurate. There are many adults who enjoy cartoons. In fact, some adults find references in them that a child might not entirely understand (the writers of these cartoons understand that parents will be in the audience, so some of the jokes are aimed more at the parents than at the kids). While the majority of adults may not necessarily watch cartoons that are aimed at little kids, classic cartoons like Looney Tunes are still entertaining, and many adults appreciate them.In our culture, we expect adults to be "mature," and historically, cartoons have been considered something associated with children; thus, you may not hear a lot of adults admitting they still enjoy watching cartoons. On the other hand, the popularity of the Cartoon Network's evening programming ("Adult Swim") and programs like Family Guy and the Simpsons certainly show that adults do like to watch cartoons.

because cartoons are not what an adult should watch unless he has kids. ___ On the contrary, many adults watch cartoons, and it is okay. That girl obviously doesn't like cartoons, but that doesn't mean no girls like them, or that they are any worse to watch than some of the "adult" shows that can be stupid too. There is no rule in adulthood that says you can't watch cartoons. I am an adult, and there are some cartoons that I enjoy watching.
