Why do airplanes not go into space?

The wings of an aeroplane use the air to hold up the plane. The Earth's atmosphere does not extend into space, it ends about 200 miles up. Planes cannot function without air. Therefore, space travel is done by means of rockets rather than planes.

Jet engines require oxygen to operate. They do not have their own source of the gas like space rockets have. Most are not equipped to handle the cold and pressures (lack of it) found in space.

If aircraft fly in space why not aeroplanes?

Only specialized aircraft fly in space - airplanes are not pressurized or shielded the way rockets and the space shuttle are, so they can't go into space.

Can an airplane go to space?

No. Airplanes need air to fly. The wing shape when passing through the air, creates more pressure on the bottom of the wing than on the top creating lift. In space there is no air and so airplanes will not work.

Can airplanes fly into space?

No. Airplanes cannot fly into space. They need air to hold them up. That's the purpose of the wings on both sides. They also need oxygen to burn their fuel. The airplane can't go anyplace where the air isn't thick enough to support the wings or where it lacks enough oxygen for the fuel. In space, there's no air at all.

What is the force that prevents objects on on or close to earth from getting lost in space such as the space station space shuttles or airplanes?

Gravity.

What is the difference between a rocket and an airplane?

Rockets carry their own fuel and oxygen for propulsion, allowing them to operate in space where there is no atmosphere. Airplanes rely on engines that require oxygen from the atmosphere to generate thrust and lift. Rockets go to space, while airplanes fly within Earth's atmosphere.
