There are a few reasons animals must be euthanized if they do not get adopted. The primary reason is lack of space. In a shelter that does not turn animals away, this is a very common problem. In most places stray animals must be held a specific number of days before they can either be put into the adoption program or be euthanized. This gives the real owner the opportunity to find and reclaim the animal. During the holding period for the stray animal there are still other animals coming into the shelter. If those animals are healthy and adoptable, they need a space to live until they are adopted, go to rescue, or can find a foster home. Animals that come to the shelter that are sick or mentally unstable, will be euthanized immediately if it is determined that the animal cannot be helped. In some cases dogs that have been in shelter for a long period of time will develop "kennel stress." A dog with kennel stress begins to show behaviors that are not typical for that particular dog. Some of the symptoms include: hyperactivity, increased barking, depression, anxiety, and sometimes aggression. The shelter staff can try to control the severity of the kennel stress by moving the dog to a different kennel or different room for a change of scenery. It also helps if the dog can be moved to a quieter area of the shelter. Increased exercise will help the dog as well as taking the dog to an event such as an adoption day or obedience classes. If the dog does not get adopted, sent to rescue, or put into a foster home, it will eventually become so mentally unstable that it will have to be euthanized. The best ways to prevent euthanization of adoptable animals is to adopt an animal from a shelter, be a foster parent, be a responsible owner by not allowing your animal run loose, and do not get an animal unless you are sure you will be able to keep it for his entire natural life. All dogs and cats should be microchipped. This will allow a shelter to find the animal's owner very quickly if it becomes lost. Collars and tags are good but can be lost or stolen. Another way to decrease the number of animals entering animals shelters each year is to have your animal spayed or neutered.
Animals get put to sleep for many different reasons. For example; if an animal is really hurt and is in pain, that animal may be put to sleep to be put out of its miser. Another example; an animal may be put to sleep if it is too vicious because it is dangerous around people.
If they are really sick they have to be put asleap because then the dog won't suffer.
