Artists use color for many reasons:
Some artists, like Van Gough, use color to express emotion in their work.
Other artists use color to add realism to their work.
Painters use color in their work by picking up the brush, putting it in some water, dipping it in paint, and then by using strokes on the paper to apply that color.
Pastel artists pick up a pastel stick of the desired hue (color) and apply it to their work manually (using their hands).
He used colours to represent emotion. Like he would sit down and listen to music and if the music was rock, then he would use black (representing death) or yellow (representing irritation) . Stuff like that, each colour represents a emotion and thats who Kandinsky used colour to show emotion :) x

Black technically is the complete absence of colour, however, when artists are painting pictures with dark shadows in them, we do not use black to achieve these shadows. Instead we admix the complementary colour to the base colour. This results in a very dark "black". I would suppose that there would therefore be any number of "shades" of black.
