Best Answer

Pie has vents in the crust so the filling is evenly cooked with the crust. Plus, it looks pretty!

More information:

Vents are cut in pie crusts to allow steam to escape and to prevent the filling from boiling out of the crust.

The top crust of a pie is cut with slits to allow steam to escape from the filling during baking. If the steam does not have any other way to escape it will break the top crust and can make quite a mess.

Putting holes in pie crusts (called docking) lets the steam escape so the pie crust doesn't puff up in the oven
