Because bedbugs live by feeding on the blood of humans, and they are programmed to detect the breathing out of any humans that are asleep. They will make for the source of that breath, wherever within about 30 metres of them it is. The breath they detect and home in on will normally be from somebody who is asleep in a bed. The bedbug once it has found the bed wiill then climb into it from below, or else jump on it and then crawl into it from above and sip the blood of the occupant of that bed. That is their meal. They will then move to a hiding place very near to where that person sleeps, and may come back and have another feed on subsequent nights of the blood of that person or anybody else who sleeps in that bed then.
