Bees live in hives where the females bees do a majority of the work. They are the ones to build the comb, and to collect the pollen for it.
Bumble bees live in pre-existing cavities such as abandoned rodent burrows, old bird nests, or hollow spaces in trees. They do not build hives like honey bees, but rather create small colonies inside these cavities where the queen lays her eggs and the workers store nectar and pollen.

The ones closest to their hives! Bees try to be efficient and will collect from the closest source of pollen. Bee keepers are very savvy about locating their hives in such a way as to take advantage of such things as orange groves and clover fields to create varietals with subtle flavors that add to the enjoyment of nature's sweetener.
The friendliest bees in a hive are the drones (males), because they don't have a stinger. Otherwise, any bee will sting something close to her if she feels it is threatening her colony. However, nurse bees rarely leave the hive, and the ones that are most likely to sting you when you get too close to their home are the older bees whose job it is to defend the hive.
