Because when you feed them a banana they have to know that it tastes good. They also have to know if pasta or cooked rice tastes good. My birds actually have to know if Grits I make them taste good too. They like their grits with a little seasoning, nothing too harsh.
The odd thing is that bird food pellets (seed is only a treat) smells like and looks like fruity pebbles but tastes like cardboard. They obviously have totally different taste sensors than humans.
