The term is a bit misleading. Iron workers actually are construction men who erect the steel frames in large buildings and skyscrapers. Many work on steel girders very high off the ground. It is not a job for one who is scared of heights.

Vital members of the construction industry, structural iron and steel workers are usually employed by ironwork contractors. They may fabricate, place, repair, and install steel girders, ornamental iron, precast concrete, steel curtains, and other metals used in roadwork, bridges, dams, and building construction. A structural iron and steel worker may be called upon to erect and install scaffolding or prefabricated buildings. The ability to read blueprints is helpful. Every structural iron and steel worker may not be required to weld, but possessing that ability is often considered an asset. Training may be obtained on the job, but most often these workers complete an apprenticeship program through either a trade and technical school, community college, or through a local building trade union. All of these programs typically work closely with the construction industry and many offer assistance in job placement. The apprenticeship programs generally take from three to five years to complete. At the completion of the program, the student is considered a journeyman and is qualified to work in many phases of the industry. For those who enjoy working with their hands and enjoy using the tools of the trade, structural iron and steel work offers a good salary. At the beginning of a training or apprenticeship program, employees may earn from $11 to $15 per hour in most parts of the country. Journeymen can easily make from $25 to $30 per hour. Salaries vary greatly across the country. In some of the northern states, salaries in excess of $40 an hour are not uncommon. Due to the nature of the business, overtime is often required. Working conditions are often outside, and workers may be exposed to harsh weather conditions. Many structural iron and steel workers elect to work through a trade union and over the course of a career, may work for several different employers. Other workers may prefer more stable employment and obtain a job at a fabrication shop or steel mill. Years of experience may lead to a supervisory position with substantially more responsibility and compensation.
