I think they always have bab endings so you are alwys eager to see how that problem is solved. however, Take the Reins didn't have a bad ending.
And maybe they do it for the sake of variety. I mean, virtually every other book you read has a happy ending, right? So, they probably felt like putting a little variety in there.

As of now, there are no additional Canterwood Crest books planned. The original series was concluded with the publication of the final book, "City Secrets," in 2014. However, the author, Jessica Burkhart, has continued to write other books and may explore similar themes or genres in the future.
