Why do cars consume more more petrol in cities than they do on highways?

Because in cities you have to stop your car too many times in traffic signals or in traffic jams. Because of this your car burn too much fuel!
But on highways your car runs at constant speed without any stoppage which donot cause too much fuel usage!
