So they can keep there balance. There are 5 toes in the front, and 4 in the back on each foot.
Typically a cat will have five toes, four on the front of the foot and one up towards the heel. Each toe has a claw, but only the four at the front of the foot also have hairless "pads". The central pad on a cat's foot is not a toe but what would be the ball of a human's foot. Polydactyl cats--having six toes--became famous when Hemingway adopted one. Many "barn" cats are this type of cat.
each foot has 5 toes, the norm for mammals.
They can, yes, but it is not a breed standard. Some cats can have a genetic deformity that sometimes makes them have six or more toes.
alot of people think hyenas are in the dog family but they are actually more closely related to cats. hyenas have 4 toes per foot like cats where dogs have five. they are not cats but are closely related.
Cats spread their toes when you pet them because it helps them maintain balance and feel more secure.
A cat's foot is called a paw. Each paw has five toes with retractable claws that enable cats to grip onto surfaces and hunt effectively.
Not necessarily. Cats who have extra toes are called "polydactyl cats." This is caused by a genetic mutation. Their paws may look like they have thumbs or mittens, and it is not dangerous to a cat's health. Sometimes, these cats are actually bred for the extra toes. On the other hand, there are cases in which it can be a potentially serious problem. This is a condition called radial hypoplasia, in which the extra toes are not separate from the normal toes but are adjacent to them. This makes the cat's foot appear flat instead of like a mitten.
Cats are digitigrade. Digitigrades are animals that stand or walk on their toes. They move more quietly and quickly compared to other animals.
They have 5 toes per foot, just like every other primate.
As the above poster said it is a deformity. Years ago witches preferred to have a cat with 6 - 7 toes. A cat with 6 - 7 toes has Polydactyly (extra digits on paws) and it's common among Celtic cats and also some cats on the Eastern Coast in American and SW Britain. There is one breed of cat that extra digits are meant to be and it's called 'Twisty.' In Cornwall, England one lady had a 6 cats with 6 toes. In Havant, Hampshire a lady had 6 cats and 3 had 6 toes and 2 had 4 toes on each foot. One had the normal amount of toes. Generally these cats are classified as 'mitten cat' and have more toes, but no thumb. You would think it would be a detriment to the cat, but instead their dexterity is far greater (almost human like) and they can get into mischief by opening up boxes (just like human hands.) Many owners have some good laughs over what these cats can get into. Enjoy your cat and don't worry as the cat will be fine, but like any other pet your cat should have a yearly check up. If you find your cat limping, then you should take the cat into the vet to have it's feet checked. Also keep the claws snipped down and if your cat won't allow you to do it then your vet will have to.
The ostrich's foot is unusual because it has just 2 toes. This differs from many other flightless birds, which have three toes.
A typical human has five toes on each foot. Although a person may have had one or more toes amputated, or were born with less than five. Sometimes, a person can be born with more than five toes on each foot, but this is quite rare.
