They do it because they need to sharpen/clean there claws and keep them healthy. They do this on trees most of the time. But if they are indoors a lot they use furniture or walls/doors as a substitute

Usually it is because they think they see something on the wall that they would like to catch. Cats are hunters, and have much more acute senses than we do; if they see a bug or a speck of dust that looks like it's moving like prey, they are hard-wired to try and catch it.

Some cats also simply like high places, where they can look down on their domain. Such cats will often climb curtains, or any other vertical thing which they can set their claws into.

Cats rub against things because they are spreading their scent to mark their territory. They also rub against you to mark you as "their" human!
