This is just a guess.
I think they do it just because they think the stuff is theirs. And, like any creature, they want to hide and protect what's theirs... whether its a cat nip mouse or my chapsticks... Once one of my cats lays claim to something... there is a good chance i wont see it until i clean out my closet.
