Crested geckos(R. Cilatus) thrive in a habitat ranging from 50-80% humidity at all times. If a crested geckos enclosure is not providing enough humidity and moisture for the shedding process, in most cases a Crested Gecko will burrow into the most moist spot of the tank. This could be the soil from a planted tank, or even some damp paper towel cramped up in the back. Look over your humidity levels and be sure that they are reaching 75-80% daily for at least three or four hours. To do so, add a couple of extra greens in the set up, provide a tank with peat moss/ coco-husk mix as substrates (this tends to hold moisture for longer periods of time) or simply add a tupperwear container with a hole cut in the lid and filled with paper towels, be sure to mist it daily to keep moist.

A crested gecko will seek shelter in the substrates for two main reasons. One reason is that the animal is seeking a moist area to ensure a healthy shed takes place. Another reason is that during the warmer months of spring and summer, females will lay eggs. These eggs will be laid weather they have been fertilized or not.

Most likely to hide from the sun. I think they're cold blooded, their blood changes based upon their environment, so they cant sit in the sun all day.

They hide under rocks to keep themselves out of the sun at particularly hot times of the day or to hide from predators. Sometimes it's even where they live.
