Dogs are carnivores. Unlike humans, dogs aren't very picky about what parts of an animal's body that they consume, and apparently, bone marrow is pretty tasty to them. Bones also provide the dog with calcium and other nutrients.

Most dogs love bones whether they are rawhide or meat bones, however some dogs have a preference for one or the other. The bones not only taste good to them but they help remove plaque from teeth. Chewing on a bone can release endorphins that make dogs happy.

Certain types of bones are great for a dog to chew on, such as raw beef bones with a bit of meat on them. It helps to keep their teeth clean and healthy, which means nicer breath. It also gives them something to do. A bored dog is not a happy or healthy one and can get into bad habits. So give him a nice bone to have a good gnaw at. Just take care if you have children around, he may not want to share. And don't be offended if he buries it later, that's totally normal and would have been part of a survival instinct, saving some for tougher times.
