Ducks can drown or look like they are drowning when they are mating or - the obvious answer - fighting.

Male ducks ( Drakes) will fight each other for mates and if you observe them will sometimes try and mate with a female in water..this looks like he is drowning her.

Female ducks will sometimes (I have seen this with my own eyes) try to drown another duck's ducklings. This is a horrible sight. The cause of these 'killings' is the natural instinct to survive. The mothers both want their ducklings to have the best chance of survival.

I hope this has helped you!

Ducks don't drown because they have webbed feet, helping them to propel themselves through the water, and their tails, wings, and feathers help to keep them balanced and afloat. Ducks are taught by their mothers how to swim when they are still little ducklings, and yes, that is part of the reason they don't drown. But they physical build of a duck is what mainly keeps them afloat.

A duck that cannot fly (baby duck or duck with wings clipped) can easily drown. If they cannot escape the water they will eventually succumb.
