The previous answer was so ridiculous and childish, I had to just delete it completely. The short answer to this is that he is either bored and/or lonely, and he thinks he can get what he wants from you with minimal effort. Unfortunately, this is almost always true. Whether it was a previous girlfriend, or you, who let this behavior develop, the fact of the matter is that he now sees you as recyclable. He can throw you away when he's done with you and then pick you up when he wants to use you again. Not all guys do this, but the ones that do, they do it because they believe they can get away with it. The real question is, do you take him back each time and how do you feel after he leaves? Real relationships don't strengthen with the yo-yo effect, so unless you are completely okay with on-again/off-again relationships, end it now while you can, if at least for yourself. Saying no can be difficult, but you will feel much better about it later on.

Chances are he realized what he had in you and what he is missing, or he is lonely and hasn't found someone else yet. Ask him why and see what his reply is but before you make a decision to take him back remember why he is your ex in the first place and be sure your willing to endure a relationship with him again.

Asking him is the only way you'll know. Every human behaves differently.

He might want to try and patch things up. Or he might only be interested in you for his own personal gain. Everyone is different.

There is no particular reason - it could be coincidence, it could be a new start or it could be that you just frequent the same areas so its inevitable. I wouldn't read too much into it.

Sounds to me like ex-boyfriends are either desperate, their girlfriends are amazing, or a combination of both.
