The material itself ... the fabric ... is woven out of fibers that are themselves flammable.

In order to make it "fire retardant" (there's no such thing as 'flameproof'), the fabric

is soaked in a chemical bath that fills in the tiny spaces in, and between, the fibers.

Household washing removes that chemical filler little by little, until eventually, there's

nothing left to retard fire, and if you want the fabric to do that, then the chemical filler

needs to be replaced.

Same story with some "waterproof" fabrics.
