The point of video game ratings are so parents know what they're getting for their children and what content is in the game. It's important to note that the ratings suggest that a game or program May or MAY NOT be suitable for a certain age and maturity. This is meant to be a guideline. Therefore, what may be acceptable to the parents of one 6-year-old may not be to another. But the rating system is at least helpful in guiding parents in the right direction. What do the ratings on Video Games mean? Why do they rate video games? And should there be ratings on video games?

The ratings mean that it is possible to tell what the video games contain and explain. For example early childhood is most appropriate for kids. One of the reasons for video game ratings is so the buyer knows what that they are buying instead of having to guess what the game is like. The ratings are so important so when you get a game rated M it has violence, alcohol, language, tobacco reference. I-pod, and cell phones also have games too so if do not have a portable game device you still can play games. The following chart shows examples of video games in order by ratings and the games in this rating category.

There should not be age ratings because they make more people buy them because they are not aloud them, so basically it is a money making scheme by the government.

I agree with the previous answer completely and cant think of anything to add.

Ratings for Kids Computer Games?

Purchasing kids computer games can be especially difficult when you are unsure of what is appropriate for your child's age range. This is where ESRB ratings come in handy. Each computer game and video game on the market has a rating from the Entertainment Software Rating Board. This rating system, similar to the ways that movies are rated, will let you know if the game is appropriate for young children or if it is recommended for older teenagers. In computer games for young kids, try to choose something suitable for their age that is not only educational, but includes no violence.
