∙ 14y agoIn a general way,it began when women still wore long dresses on a daily basis , and were in real danger of getting their skirts caught in doors. Also, there was a prevailing attitude that women were the " weaker " sex , and could not open heavy doors . It persists as a courtesy,which some of us really appreciate, and consider quite gentlemanly behavior.
