Gerbils can die like humans like from an illness such as: Tyzzers Disease, Cancer, Lumps in the Abdomen (common in males as I've had an experience of a gerbil with one that died a week later) Theres tons of ways a gerbil can die. I'd research it.
Gerbils die for many reasons, from old age, cancer, all the problems we can have. Unfortunately one of my gerbils died from a neighbors dog grabbing it (when I was playing with him outside) and running with him in his mouth, luckily we got him back before he was eaten though. So be careful with your gerbils.
I had gerbils as a kid. One day I noticed Romeo digging like mad, I looked away to play with my polly pockets or something, when I looked at him again he was on his back, little legs up in the air at the bottom of his little self-dug grave. A few weeks later I noticed his mate Juliet digging. Yep you guessed it, she too dug her own grave. They had good long lives and many babies.
TL;DR? In my experience, they begin digging a little grave for themselves. It isn't normal gerbil-digging. You'll know it when you see it.
Three years old or less.

For the same reason humans die.
mallets land on them
you never know unless you feel them inside your gerbils stomach wich can be very dangerous for the mother and the babies !!!!
Well, when they are born you know they're young. and when the die you know they are old unless you murder them.
Yes. gerbils die very stiff and won't open their eyes. It doesn't take long for gerbils to die; they die faster when it is sickness or blleding that they are dying from

Gerbils will NOT swim they will drown. They are native to the desert and they don't know how to swim.
You can NEVER know when a person is going to die
