Best Answer

Rectangular pupils enhance the goats peripheral vision, allowing them to see predators in a wider spectrum than animals with oval shaped pupils. Other animals with rectangular pupils include cattle, deer, horses, and sheep.

Here's a hypothesis: Housecats evolved in the wild to chase varmints down holes. This requires a very rapid adjustment to very little light upon entering the varmint's hole. The adjustment of the eye's pupil happens more rapidly when it goes from a slit to a wide opening than if it was from a small circle to a wide circle: from a slit to a wide opening, the pupil only has to expand in one dimension, whereas from a small circle to a large circle it has to expand in two dimensions. The iris muscles that do the expanding would get more leverage if they only have to work in one dimension. Other, larger feline species such as your typical wildcat have round pupils because they are too big to go down holes after prey, and their typical prey lives out in the open anyway.

This hypothesis would also explain the role of housecat whiskers, and why they are just the width they are. They seem to be about the width of varmint holes that are wide enough for the cat to turn around in and get back out of. If a cat goes down a hole and the tunnel gets narrow enough that the sides touch the cat's whiskers, the cat can tell by that whisker touch that the hole is getting too narrow and it had better turn around now and go back out of the tunnel, lest it get trapped in a tunnel that is too narrow to turn around and get back out of.

Goats and Sheep have slit or what is usually referred to as verticle pupils to help them see predators. These pupils help them to see a broader area around their heads. Their dead on vision is not very good. SO this is God's, nature's way of compensating.
