Hot water has much heat to transfer to the ice, cooling itself down and melting the ice.
Temperature difference is the driving force of this, heat always going from high to lower temperature.
When both (remaining) water and (remaining) ice reach the same temperature heat exchange will stop.

In the US Navy, a really hot Lieutenant can expect to be "deep selected" for LCDR after being a LT for 4 years, and the good LT hopes to make it in 5. If he is "passed over" for selection, there is a very slim chance that he can make it in the following year, but after that he's generally out. The O4/LCDR rank is really the first cut; anybody who breathes can become an O3 LT, but the Navy generally plans to cut about 30% of the LTs at the 8-year-mark.

What I would do is boil the retainer in hot water to get the germs off. Then wash it in hot, soapy water. Lt it dry or towel dry it and it should be fine!! NO! Boiling in hot water can damage the retainer (or palatal expander or whatever you're trying to clean). I had this happen with my daugher's retainer and I cleaned it with antibacterial soap & water, then let it soak in Listerine for an hour, before cleaning it with Polident (following directions for denture soaking). I think that between those three the germs, bacteria, etc. should have been vanquished.
