Lets say you want to move an arm, the brain sends a small electrical message along our nerve cells to the muscles. When the message reaches the end of the nerve cell it stops, but it then causes a special chemical, called a neurotransmitter spills out just next to a special place of the muscle, which is known as the receptor site.

If you want to understand this in a basic form, it would be: we have them so we can move parts of our body.

Hope it helped.
