Infants have a inborn sucking reflex related to survival, obtained usually via breast milk. The association with pleasure often leads into a habit and, since hand-to-mouth is a common reflex also, the thumb enters more easily than the other fingers which are also sucked by a less populated number. This habit can continue through adulthood, and often does.
