Your question has many possible answers due to the fact that each of us is an individual, with our own unique set of desires, needs and internal images. However, I feel that one of the more basic reasons that many men seem to actually hurt women is that these men are immature little boys who have not worked through the archaic issues that resulted from their relationship with their mother when they were young.
Such men, regardless of their physical age, never complete the first stage of our psychological journey which is the quest for self-esteem. Without this basic insight such "men" cannot form true emotional bonds with women, who are generally more emotionally mature than men anyway. These "men/boys" often hurt the women they encounter and will continue to do so until they "grow up", if they ever do.
If you are a woman who finds herself repeatedly attracted to such men this pattern could bring much emotional pain into your life. The good news is that it is possible to end such a self-destructive pattern and to find someone who is totally right for you.
