Animals make loud noises (howls, roars, whinnies, etc) for several reasons. * To communicate with other animals who are out of sight * To warn off animals who are in their territory * To warn animals that there is a predator in the area (this includes a human) * To show how fit and strong they are in order to attract a mate

because the small muscle in their throat called the Deco Tutankhamen is the center bass that the howl is then vibrated into their lungs and is the lungs compress the howl to make a screech that is then bellowed out through the thoat hole. (in out ears it sounds like a howl but in our scientific study the sound is so dense it is more like a screech then a howl)

Owls do not howl, they hoot.

Owls make a variety of sounds, depending on species. The barred owl, for example does hoot, but also makes sounds similar to a dog's howl, even bark like sounds. The saw whet owl makes a bell like sound over and over til it sounds like a trilling bell.

Edit: Barred do not make sounds similar to barking nor howling.

Male howler monkeys make noise to get a mate. A female will hear the call and know its location. They use it for communication.
