The reason that monkeys live in trees is because they want to get away from animals that live in flat land. For example bears they have the power to climb a tree and get away from it.
A lot of their predators aren't able to climb very well, while monkeys are usually very fast in the trees. The trees give them a big advantage.

They live in what is called the understory , the elevated but shaded sections of the trees. The two higher levels are the canopy and emergent level (high trees). Some leaf-eating monkeys, such as the colobus, live in the emergent trees.
Monkeys mostly live in South America, Southern Asia and Africa. They often live in rain forests, such as the Amazon. Monkeys live in trees, but there are species that also live on the ground in the savannahs.
