Monks, for the most part, are Benedictines which would include the Cistercians, and the Cistercians of the Strict Observance, which are both offshoots from them. The Camaldolese founded near the end of the first millenium are hermits which are an offshoot of the Benedictines. The Carthusians are entirely separate and were founded about a 100 years later. But the Benedictines began in the 6th century, the habit that they still wear, an ankle length robe with a long apron type affair that hangs in the front and back was pretty standard garb back in the ancient times, for peasant workers and has changed very little since then. The Second Vatican Council said: "The religious habit, an outward mark of consecration to God, should be simple and modest, poor and at the same time becoming. In addition, it must meet the requirements of health and be suited to the circumstances of time and place and to the needs of the ministry involved."
