An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or temblor) is the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic wave. The seismicity, seismism or seismic activity of an area refers to the frequency, type and size of earthquakes experienced over a period of time.

The whole of Earth's surface is split up into blocks known as tectonic plates, so in that respect, earthquakes have to happen near tectonic plates! The majority of large earthquakes actually happen near tectonic plate boundaries.

This is because the tectonic plates are in motion, and move (very slowly) in various directions. When they collide with each other or slide past each other, stress or pressure can build up leading to earthquakes. The majority of this pressure develops at the boundaries of the plates as this is where they bump into or slide past each other and so this is where the majority of earthquakes occur.

Earthquakes occur at all plate boundaries.

Why does Britain not get effected by earthquakes?

Britain is effected by earthquakes. However because Britain is not near a tectonic plate boundary, the earthquakes that occur tend to be low in magnitude.

What kind of plate tectonic causes earthquakes?

Transform boundary

What regions do earthquakes mostly occur?

earthquakes usually occur at tectonic plate boundaries

What plate boundary do earthquakes usually occur on?

earthquakes only happen at the edge of tectonic plates because of them moving which causes the 'quake' so there are never any BIG earthquakes in the UK because it is in the middle of a tectonic plate

What kind of boundaries can cause earthquakes and volcanoes?

Earthquakes can occur at any type of plate boundary, but the most powerful earthquakes tend to occur at convergent boundaries and at transform boundaries.

Where in the earth do the most Earthquakes occur?

on the tectonic plate margins.

Why do earthquakes occur more often in some places that in others?

They occur because of nature. Volcanic eruptions signal off an earthquake because normally a volcanic eruption and an earthquake are on a fault line/edge of a tectonic plate.

Is Morroco at risk from earthquakes?

Morocco is at a low risk for earthquakes because it is not in close proximity to a tectonic plate boundary.
