At the extreme western end of the Caribbean Sea, right on the cusp of the vast Atlantic Ocean, is the small island nation of Barbados. The only city of any size on the island is the capital of Bridgetown, located on the coast of the islands’s southwest corner. Barbados is one of the Caribbean’s most developed nations, with a literacy rate, infrastructure and standard of living higher than many of its neighbors’. The climate is normal for the region, with a rainy season from June to November. Fortunately, Barbados is far enough east to avoid most of the dangers of hurricane season.Barbados was a British colony until well into the 20th century, so you’ll find lots of British customs here. English is the official language, and Bajan cars are driven on the left side of the road. Bajan is how residents of this country refer to themselves. Barbados has a good bus system that covers most of the island except for a few of the more remote areas. That’s a good thing, because while most of the island’s residents live in Bridgetown, it’s a little short on visitor accommodations. Most of them are found in the smaller seaside towns of the south and west coasts.Bridgetown is one of the Caribbean’s most popular destinations for boutique shopping. If you’re on a cruise in this area, it’s very likely to stop in Bridgetown for a visit to its great duty-free shops. Bajan boutiques sell a wide range of goods from tropical souvenirs to jewelry, and they’re convenient as well - many of them accept American dollars. Even at the ones that don’t, the exchange rate is nice and simple at almost exactly 1 USD to 2 Barbados dollars.Arts and EntertainmentFor such a small island, Bridgetown’s art community is quite prosperous. There are many galleries and shows throughout the year. There’s also a museum in the George Washington house, a painstakingly restored colonial-era plantation that housed a young George Washington on his very first international voyage. Sports, especially cricket, are well-represented at Kensington Oval, one of the Caribbean’s leading stadiums.Tourism is the biggest business here, and Bridgetown’s visitors can look forward to swimming, snorkeling and other relaxing beachside activities. The Atlantic coast is considerably rougher and less developed than the island’s south and west sides, so many of the desirable beaches are quite close to Bridgetown.Food and DrinkBajan cuisine is a unique mix of highly-spiced Caribbean dishes and bland British fare. The delicious flying fish is the island’s icon, and it’s a common meal as well. It’s often fried and served with a mustard sauce made fiery with scotch bonnet peppers. The widespread Caribbean pepperpot is another local favorite. There are a few top-notch luxury restaurants and a lot of independent street vendors. Plan ahead if you’re going to be in Bridgetown over the weekend, because almost everything shuts down for Sunday and much of Saturday. Be sure to stock up on the locally brewed Banks beer or some fresh Barbados rum. Sugarcane and rum have been Barbados’s main exports for hundreds of years, and it’s no different today. Rum is everywhere, and tours are available at the Mount Gay distillery for a modest price.
