Best Answer

To eliminate or reduce the effects of piracy and bootlegged copies. When a movie opens first in US, bad copies are distributed by millions to unreleased markets in pireted DVD's. By the time it gets to those markets the revenue from theaters drops as many people have seen it already.

By opening first in Intl. markets, interest on pirated copies drops -as you can watch it full quality in theaters- and the expectation builds in the US before its release.
