Why do non-religious people think that humans are unique?

AnswerAll species are unique in some way, and so humans have their own unique abilities. It was once thought that only humans could use tools, but now scientists know otherwise. It was once thought that only humans could produce a range of sounds (speech) that others of the species would recognise. It was once even thought that only humans could express emotions such as love. We now know that, although humans are unique, they are not as special as once thought.

We are unique because our very special capabilities allowed our ancestors to survive and prosper. We evolved to walk upright, use our hands, with opposable thumbs, and to think about and solve abstract problems to a greater degree than any other species can. It was evolution that made us unique, not an unseen deity.
