Why do parents not get divorced?

That depends on many things. They may stay together for their children, so that the kids don't have to make a lot of choices such as: who's house do we stay at, how long do we stay at each house, who gets custody, who gets to claim them on their income taxes, etc etc. People might want to avoid all the hassle of getting a divorce.

There can also be an emotional side to it, for example some parents might think it sets the worst possible example of marriage to their children if they get divorced. Some believe that the children of divorced parents become more likely to get a divorce themselves.

Finally, the parents might hold off on a divorce in hopes that they can resolve their differences and become less incompatible.
