A:People who agree with or believe the Book of Genesis do so because they have been taught that it is wholly true and inerrant, often since early childhood.

A young child is taught to believe implicitly that God created the world just as it says in Genesis. Then when told in his or her late teen years that the origins of the world are somewhat different, the new information can be blocked by life-long beliefs. Some find it incredibly difficult to accept that the world is billions of years old, or that species actually evolved.

Even when told that there are actually two creation stories (Genesis 1:1-2:4a and 2:4b-25) and that they are very different in accounts of creation, many insist that this can not be true. Similarly, when told that there are two Flood stories woven together, this can be hard to accept. Abraham simply had to have met the Philistines in coastal Palestine because Genesis says so - even if there were no Philistines until many centuries later.

Childhood conditioning results in people continuing to believe what others have ceased to believe.

This type of question can be asked of many topics, particularly in Science and Philosophy. It is broad in nature, subjective and has many components to the answer. Suffice it to say that mankind has a mind that is inquisitive and capable of discovery/reasoning - accidentally, being given or via extensive research. People in the Western World have freedom to believe or disbelieve in whatever they read or hear.

Though it is true that many who agree with a book, work or thought do so primarily via their family/educational upbringing, some go on in life to 'search out' truths or answers to core questions. This has been going on through the ages and will probably continue ad infinitum. Although these strive to understand a book or work, it does not necessarily mean they will come to the truth or be in agreement with others who are doing the same search.

Interestingly, concerning the Book of Genesis in recent times particularly, various science and historic learned people have discovered artifacts and ancient writings supporting the accounts in Genesis firmly. Indeed, there are newer 'theories' surfacing post the 'Age of Enlightenment' of the 18-19th centuries when the pendulum of thought went against biblical teachings that are considered worthy of study and discussion. Perhaps many more will.
