Why do people get the sacriment of confirmation?

It is celebrated because the young person is making adult decision to remain a loyal member of the Church. Just as Jewish people celebrate when a teenage boy or girl makes their Bar/Bat Mitzvah, so too, do Catholics & other Christians celebrate Confirmation.

Catholics celebrate confirmation when they are usually around the age of 13. It strengthens their faith and is often referred to as "Becoming solider for Christ." In a way it can symbolize maturity in a young Catholic. Protestant churches also have confirmations and dedication ceremonies, usually in the 6th or 7th grades.

Because it is one of the seven sacraments that Our Blessed Lord gave us for our salvation. It is the sacrament which completes Baptism, and is the second of the three sacraments of initiation (along with Baptism and Holy Communion). Primarily because it sends the Holy Spirit to strengthen you in your faith. It, however, is not magic, like any other sacrament, you must actually exercise it to get any benefit from it.

Confirmation is a rite of passage from childhood to mature adult. It signifies the person is now mature enough to be responsible for his / her own spiritual life. But the Sponsor is to help guide and direct you until you begin to experience the Holy Spirit's guidance within you.
