People usually do not mind paying all taxes. For instance, most people appreciate the money that goes towards things like road repairs, emergency services, libraries, education, feeding the truly needy, elderly services, and military protection.

What people dislike is when their tax money is misused. When a government department does things like lays off employees, and then approves a million dollar fountain to be built within a few days of each other, taxpayers resent their money going to that department. Taxpayers also do not like it when the government overspends on needed items. They understand that the government may need trash cans for the desks at the office facilities, but not why they need to spend $200 on each one.

Many feel that the government takes more than their share, and then spends it on things they do not approve of. They are offered services they may never use, then sometimes denied the ones that they do need.

Also, many taxpayers feel resentful when their money pays for an official to do things like spend thousands of dollars on hotel rooms during trips, while they struggle to afford groceries or keep the power on.

Many taxes are needed, but people recognize that the people they give their money to could be doing a lot better with it.
