Bastille Day represents the first steps that led to the foundation of the French Republic, and as such has been chosen as France's national day, called Fête Nationale in French, or more simply le quatorze juillet, because it is celebrated every fourteenth of July, regardless of the day of the week.

It celebrates two events, the rather destructive storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, which was the historical starting date of the French Revolution, but more importantly, it celebrates the Fête de la Fédération which started on July 14, 1790, the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille. This date was considered as the first constructive step toward the foundation of the first French Republic two years later, on September 22, 1792.

July 14 is considered a more significant symbol for the Republic than September 22, and was thus promulgated the public holiday known as the Fête Nationale in 1880.
In France the 14th of July is called "Bastille day" or "le quatorze juillet" (or Fête Nationale) and it is remembered that on this day in 1789 the Bastille prison was

stormed by a mob, marking this event the beginning on the French Revolution.

The anniversary of the storming of the Bastille fortress-prison was seen as a symbol of the uprising of the modern nation, and of the reconciliation of all the French inside the constitutional monarchy which preceded the First Republic, during the French Revolution.

Because it represents the French Revolution in 1789.

French Guiana is an overseas department of France, which is a similar designation as Hawaii for the United States. Therefore the same historical traditions that are important in the French mainland have currency in French Guiana. (Hawaiians celebrate US Independence Day even though they were not present for the signing of the US Declaration of Independence, but because they are Americans too.)
