THere are many reasons Christians judge others harshly. People like others to be like them, so if they see church as important in their lives, they expect others to do likewise. Some feel that non-attendance at church will lead to moral decay, in spite of the evidence to the contrary.

In Ireland, up until the late twentieth century, there was a stigma in not going to mass, but now some commentators say there is a stigma in going to mass. This change of attitude comes about in large part as a result of the publicity given to allegations of widespread paedophilia among the clergy.
