It comes down to a disturbing US trend of the last few years called "political correctness." The fact remains that if you are in this country without proper documentation, you are an illegal alien. The problem is that some people are looking for ways to grant them amnesty from prosecution or deportation, and calling them "undocumented" makes it sound like they are nothing more than US residents who have skipped over a mere technicality. Others believe that amnesty is the beginning of a very slippery slope which will, in essence, throw open the borders to any and all with no oversight of those coming into the country.
A more formal term for "illegal alien" might be "undocumented immigrant."
That is PC speak for illegal aliens.
There are no firm figures but the latest figures quoted in the media mention figures ranging from 10 to 12 Million persons.
The USA PATRIOT Act, enacted in response to the September 11 attacks, enhances law enforcement's ability to monitor and detain individuals suspected of terrorist activities, which can impact illegal aliens. It allows for increased surveillance and information sharing among agencies, potentially leading to heightened scrutiny of undocumented immigrants. Additionally, provisions of the Act can facilitate the expedited deportation of individuals deemed a security risk, including illegal aliens. Overall, the Act has contributed to a more stringent environment for undocumented immigrants in the context of national security.

Tough question, I will do my best.Undocumented aliens are often taken advantage of by businesses. Employers will pay illegal aliens a very low wage because the employer knows that the illegal alien cannot use the legal system to protect his rights. By helping illegal immigrants obtain citizenship or at least a work visa or green card, we can help keep wages up for everybody. The bad aspect of allowing formerly illegal immigrants to obtain a legal status would allow lawbreakers to flout the law. We do not want to encourage people to come here illegally.ADDED: (in the US) There are NO legalization regulations for undocumented aliens.
Undocumented or illegal aliens are unable to collect social security income even though they may have paid Social Security out of their pay checks. Also, undocumented aliens are unable to receive social security cards.

The names of the first illegal aliens in the United States are not known. There are millions of illegal immigrants that are in the US, as of 2014.
Nationwide , 33% illegal aliens in the prison system - source is Lou dobbs I think. ----- Don't know where Dobbs gets his numbers, but the study linked below finds that 17% of CA state prison inmates are aliens, counting both documented and undocumented. So illegals would be some fraction of 17%. Nationally I'd expect it to be lower.

Technically, the Department of Labor cannot offer assistance to illegal aliens. As an undocumented immigrant, you would not be eligible for public assistance. And, if discovered, you are in danger of deportation.
