A mandala is a geometric figure used by both Hindus and Buddhists. Typically it is a figure containing repeating simple geometric components (squares, circles, triangles) often arranged in a concentric manner.

The purpose of a mandala is to focus the mind of people meditating while looking at it.

While mandalas can be painted or engraved into objects such as singing bowls, the Tibetan branch of Vajrayana Buddhism has developed drawing the drawing of

mandalas with coloured sand. This is to demonstrate the permanence of the meaning of the mandala and the ephmerial nature of the physical world.
