Advent is the time before Christmas when we remember that Christ came as a little child at Christmas, but also the time when we remember that he will come again one day to be judge and king of the world.

In the Church, Advent begins on the date that allows 4 Sundays to occure before December 25th, Christmas Day. So, it begins either on the last Sunday in November, or the first in December depending upon what day Christmas day falls.

However, Advent calendars always begin on Dec 1st as a 'count down' to Christmas. They have numbered windows from 1 to 24 because Advent finishes on 24th December. 25th December is the start of the Christmas period which ends on January 6th ('Twelfth Night') at the feast of the Epiphany - the time when we remember the wise men visiting Jesus.

Although some Advent calendars DO have a Dec 25th window, they are strictly incorrect as they should have 24 only, if the calendar is to reflect Advent properly.
