Advent is the time before Christmas when we remember that Christ came as a little child at Christmas, but also the time when we remember that he will come again one day to be judge and king of the world.
In the Church, Advent begins on the date that allows 4 Sundays to occure before December 25th, Christmas Day. So, it begins either on the last Sunday in November, or the first in December depending upon what day Christmas day falls.
However, Advent calendars always begin on Dec 1st as a 'count down' to Christmas. They have numbered windows from 1 to 24 because Advent finishes on 24th December. 25th December is the start of the Christmas period which ends on January 6th ('Twelfth Night') at the feast of the Epiphany - the time when we remember the wise men visiting Jesus.
Although some Advent calendars DO have a Dec 25th window, they are strictly incorrect as they should have 24 only, if the calendar is to reflect Advent properly.
The advent calendar is no longer in operation.
You open the first window of the advent calendar on the first day of December.
An advent calendar is a calendar, used to count down the days of advent, after each day of advent goes past the owner would open a window, revealing a hidden picture or gift each day.

It is believed the first printed advent calendar was made in 1908 by a Swabian parishioner, Gerhard Lang.
The advent calendars are no longer available. Howrse puts up a notice telling you when there is going to be an advent calendar, there is always a link to it in the information about is as well as in the forum disscusions about the advent calendars. (in the month of december)
On mine, there are 24 but on some you get 25. It really depends on the type of calender you've got ;) x
The advent calendar got its name because the days leading up to Christmas, Christmas itself, and a few days after Christmas are called advent. Advent calendars are calendars that count down the days of advent, or the days before Christmas.
