Originally, people used 'lol' to say that they were "laughing out loud". But now, it has just become a thing to separate sentences or put when they have nothing else to say. LOL

Around 90% of the people who type out LOL on the computer don't literally laugh out loud. I notice LOL is overused.
I think it shows a social nervousness that can be taken as friendly or derisive depending on the context.
