In the 1800s, the passenger pigeon was the most populous bird in the world. Billions of them lived in North America. Because they were abundant, people hunted them for cheap meat. Before long, they were extinct. There are far more people now than there were in the 1800s. If we all hunted birds today, we would wipe out most of them. Why should we hunt birds at all then, since we raise plenty of animals for meat? After all, they are living, conscious organisms and play very important roles in their habitats.
