Answer:

People sometimes go to church, due to the customs and traditions in which they were reared.

"And He (Jesus) came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up: and, AS HIS CUSTOM WAS, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day..." (Luke 4:16).

Many Christians are ballistic members of the church. They go when somebody is going to throw something at them - water (their baptism), rice (their wedding), dirt (their funeral). Others simply go to keep their family happy and stay in the will or out of a sense of tradition.

People who listen to sermons generally do so to receive instruction, edification, refreshment, and to hear the Word of God expounded.

What about church attendance of people with children?

OF COURSE It is said that as people get older (ie, high school/college years), they drift away from the church, and then when they have children they go back to church with their kids. Children are very welcome at church. Sometimes there is a children's liturgy that runs along side church. This helps the children to understand the messages from the gospel better, in a more child friendly way.
