Some say GMO foods are safe, but others say the aren't. It is not actually known yet whether it is or is not safe, but some believe there are indications that it is not totally safe and may cause health issues in animals and humans.

Since there were no long term human studies and the very few long term animal studies have revealed negative health effects, we don't know that GMO foods are safe. There are those; however, that claim they are safe, but anecdotal evidence suggests otherwise.

This question is very much under debate. Some people believe that we need GM foods to make the crops pest resistant and to do well in all weather conditions so that there is plenty of food available to feed people in parts of the world that suffer famine.Other people believe that we do not yet know enough about it because it is so new. Other things that were thought of as safe and good turned out to be disastrous, such as the drug thalidomide or the pesticide DDT.In Britain, Mad Cow Disease started because cows were fed bone-meal from other animals. Cows were made to be vegetarian, and bone-meal seemed like a good way of getting things such as calcium and magnesium into them. But vegetarians do not eat bone-meal, or crushed animal bones, which is what it is.Personally, I don't think the idea of tomatoes having fish cells added to them can be right. I don't think old Mother Nature is going to take GM food lying down. Mother Nature, in my view, doesn't take too kindly to being messed about with. We are bound to be sorry sooner or later. But objectively, my opinion aside? The truth is that it is still too early for anyone to know with certainty, no matter what their theories are.

Genetically modified (GM) foods are used for a variety of reasons. They help in growing food by giving these attributes to plants.

  • Increased crop yield
  • Pest resistance
  • Herbicide tolerance
  • Disease Resistance
  • Drought tolerance

They also improve the quality of the food by:

  • Increasing the nutrition content
  • Increasing the shelf life

Cancer, Tumors, blindness, at one point GM grasses mutated and killed an entire heard of cattle plus anything that went and fed on the grasses, and anything that ate the flesh of the cattle. In trials mice were fed GM corn for two years and developed giant tumors, Sterility, and other nasty things.

The controversy about genetically modified food has to do with the fear that genetic modification of food is going to have side effects which are not yet known, particularly since genetically modified plants can hybridize with other plants and spread their modified genes to species for which those genes were not intended. By allowing big international companies, primarily Monsanto, to be able to patent food crops, we may wind up making life even harder for farmers around the world. The fact that genetic modifications are created by means of plasmids derived from viruses that are known to be carcinogenic is also a concern. And in addition to these other issues, many people feel that human beings cannot improve upon nature and should not attempt to do so. The nickname "Frankenfood" conveys this idea. Just as the fictional character of Frankenstein committed a terrible error in trying to create a new form of life, so may Monsanto be guilty of a similar, possibly more terrible error.

They are not bad. GM food have been used from ancient times through selective growing and breeding. Were it not for GM crops many more people would starve.

GM foods are brilliant. WOOOOOO! Genetically modified foods cannot be collectively put into a "good" or a "bad" category. Depending on how they are modified, they may be very good for us, very bad for us, or anywhere in between.
